Places to see in Jaipur over 3 days

I am sure you have come across several of my posts on different places to see in Jaipur. Through these posts, I have shared my fascination about each of these – what appealed to me, what I loved about it and its history. With every post of mine, I have noticed that a lot of people have requested help in planning an itinerary for Jaipur that includes all these. I have been getting a lot of messages from my readers on suggested number of days for the pink city of Jaipur, what all can be included etc. This is what has prompted me to put together this blog post on a possible plan for people heading to Jaipur for the first time. This contains, not just all the places to see in Jaipur, but also, suggestions of cultural experiences and shopping options.

My ideal time frame for this city is three full days. My personal opinion is that this is the minimum time required to see different places in Jaipur without too much of rush. Please keep in mind your time of arrival and departure into the city and calculate your actual time in the city accordingly. Let’s start with first listing all the places to see in Jaipur. Note that many of them are links to articles that I have already written and hence, you can just click on them to know more about them. I have included only the main tourist places and this is not a finite list.

Places to see in Jaipur

In addition to these places to see in Jaipur, my itinerary also, include some cultural experiences like the Chokhi Dhani Village as well as shopping in the local markets. On each of these days, scout out some local restaurants and try out some of this Rajasthani food. Bet you will love that.  So, let’s get started with Day one in Jaipur.

Day One: Forts of Jaipur

Amer Fort Jaipur - One of the places to see in Jaipur
Amer Fort Jaipur – one of the places to see in Jaipur

The Forts of Jaipur are all located a little away from the city center. If you are staying in one of the locations suggested here, then you will need at least 30 -45 minutes to traverse a 12 km distance to these forts. I strongly recommend that you start your day early to reach Amer Fort by 8 am. Here is what the day might look like

- Early breakfast at the hotel
- Reach Amer Fort by 8:00 am. You will need at least three hours here.
- After Amer Fort, head to Jaigarh Fort. This is around 15 - 20 mins from Amer Fort. Spend around 1.5 hours here
- Break for lunch near Jal Mahal. Spend a few minutes near Jal Mahal
- Post lunch head to Nahargarh Fort. Catch the sunset and the view of Jaipur city from here
- Head back to the hotel to relax
- Head to a cultural village like Chokhi Dhani for a cultural evening and dinner.

Travel Tips:

  • Request your hotel for an early breakfast. You have a long day ahead of you. You can even ask them to pack some breakfast for you just so that you don’t lose time
  • Book a cab for the entire day. You hotel should be able to arrange the same. To save time, book it in advance – possibly the previous evening.
  • Amer Fort and Jaigarh fort have a few small cafes where you can take a break and eat a few things.
  • Hydrate yourself adequately.
  • Flat shoes and comfortable cotton outfits are recommended for your day outing
  • There are quite a few restaurants along the Amer Fort road, opposite Jal Mahal. You can pick them based on your cuisine preference.
  • Chokhi Dhani is just one cultural village. My personal experience was not so great. I am told that there are other better cultural villages in Jaipur. Run a search on these and head to one based on the recommendations. The cultural villages generally begin their programs by 7pm and go late into the night. You can see some folk songs, dances, ride a camel, participate in a few games etc. Hence, prepare yourself accordingly.
  • Most of these cultural villages are on the out-skirts of the city and hence, ensure that you buffer in enough time to reach there.

Day Two: The City Palace area

Jantar Mantar in Jaipur
Jantar Mantar in Jaipur

On Day Two, you can spend a little more time having a leisure breakfast and then set out for the city center. Again, if you are staying in the suggested locations, then you can just take an auto or a local cab to Jantar Mantar. Take a look at my suggestions for this day –

- Reach Jantar Mantar by 9:00am. Keep aside an hour for this attraction.
- Once you exit Jantar Mantar, walk across to the City Palace. The gate faces the Jantar Mantar Gate itself. You will need around 1.5 to 2 hours here.
- As you exit the palace, you will come across tons of shops selling handloom items and various decor pieces. You can spend some time here doing a bit of shopping.
-Once you exit the palace, you can walk straight ahead toward the Hawa Mahal road. I recommend Kailash restaurant on this road for lunch
- After lunch, walk to the Hawa Mahal. You will need to finish your tour here by 4:30 pm as the attraction closes by that time.
- You can then, head to Birla Mandir as the same is open till 8:00 pm. To reach Birla Mandir, you will need to hail a cab or auto.
- End your day after this with a dinner at the hotel or pick a restaurant along the way.

Travel Tips:

  • Once you reach Jantar Mantar, the City Palace and Hawa Mahal are within walking distances from each other.
  • Hawa Mahal road and the City Palace market has tons of things to shop from. At both the places, there is plenty of bargaining to be done.
  • I have personally bought a few Pashminas and Jaipur bedspreads from the City Market and those are genuine enough. They are also, priced reasonably.
  • At the Hawa Mahal market, you can shop for the typical Jaipur shoes and small gift articles like curios, key chains, magnets etc.

Day Three:

Sisodia Rani Bagh
Sisodia Rani Bagh

This is a bit of a leisure day. You can start your day with a visit to Sisodia Rani Bagh and end it with some fun shopping. Check it out –

- Head to the Sisodia Rani Bagh when you please. It opens at 8 am in the morning. You will need to hire a cab to drive your there and get you back.
- After a refreshing start, ask your cab driver to drop you to Albert Hall Museum. This opens at 9:00 am.
- You will need around 1 - 1.5 hours here.
- Once you are done, take an auto or a cab to the bazaars of Jaipur - Johari Bazaar or Bapu Bazaar. Spend the rest of the day buying all that you want here. From Jaipur Jewelry to Clothes, handicrafts and more.

Travel Tips:

  • Jaipur is really popular for its Jaipur bedspreads (rajai). You can pick some either at the City Palace market during your visit on Day Two there. Alternatively, you can take a chance and buy some at Johri Bazaar or Bapu Market.
  • Jaipur jewelry is quite unique – silver studded gemstone jewelry being my personal favorite. Johri Bazaar will have you spoiled for choice.
  • The typical Bandhini type of dresses that Jaipur is really popular for, can be found at Johri Bazaar as well as Bapu Market
  • The Jaipur Jhootis or footwear is another typical item that you can look out for in these markets.

Well – with that you are all set to travel to Jaipur.  Have you already booked your tickets? If not, when are you heading there? Do comment in and share your plans. Also, let me know how you found this post.

  5. Hey Ami,

Great post. What I generally do is look for places to visit on websites like TripAdvisor and HolidayIQ. After that, I go through itineraries. This is the first time I’m going there and the second itinerary I’ve read.

These little details about the placement of one spot from the other are really helpful. I also found the time to be spent at each place quite useful.

I’ll be going in April. I know that’s not an ideal time to go there. But this is the only time I can go. Please let me know if you have any tips for me.

    Thanks,
    Siddharth

  8. What a great post. I had an amazing 2 day trip to Jaipur. Here’s my take:

While your regular forays will take you to places like Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort, I urge you to see places which are a bit far from the city.

One such place is the Sambhar Lake. Mentioned in the ancient ‘Mahabharat’, Sambhar Lake lies 80 kilometres from Jaipur, surrounded by the Aravalli hills on all sides. A relaxed 2 hour drive would take you to this splendid inland saltwater lake.

Move on to the Shakambari Mata temple nearby. The revered Hindu goddess, Shakambari Mata, is known for feeding the hungry vegetarian food (more so during famines). Legend has it that the goddess converted this town of metals into one of salt, leading to the origin of the Sambhar salt lake.

Head out for a scenic drive on the salt flats here with no traffic snarls or crowds around. Just bare plain white all around. The sunrises are pretty awesome here.

  9. Excellent post. Very detailed. Do you have a pick on which shops are great in these bazaars? The taxi drivers or guides tend to take you to a shop where they get a cut. Besides, how do you determine what is the average rate for something there?

  24. Dear Ami,
Thank you so much to present such a lovely compact informative blog. Each and every words are so helpful for me. I wanted to make this trip for a long, but your blog has really pursuaded me finally. All the stays address booked as per your suggestion. I will be visiting with my husband, two kids and my parents. My parents are senior citizens and my kids are 5 & half, 2 & half respectively. It looks very challenging some time.
Need your suggestion on if I can take the stroller for the younger one, specially for the forts? Onr thing is worrying me whether at gate I can keep the stroller, or need to carry through out the fort? There must be stair cases as well inside the fort.

    • Forts do have a lot of steps and it might be a good idea to use a babybag instead of a stroller. Or you might have to just go turn by turn at certain sections.
