Also known as the Amba Vilas Palace, the  Mysore Palace was the official residence of the  royal family of Wadiyars. Here are some interesting facts about Mysore Palace that will make you want to visit it 

It is one of the most visited tourist attractions of India - with over 6 million visitors in a year

It was first built as a wooden palace in the 14th century. After two calamities, it was finally rebuilt in 1912

The current  palace took 15 years to be completed and a sum of 42 lakhs was spent on it. It was designed by  British architect  - Henry  Irwin

Built in the Indo Sarcenic style, it has a 5-storey watchtower with a gold plated dome

The   Palace is home to a golden howdah made with 84 kgs of gold & was used by the Maharaja, Now, it is used during the Dasara procession and Goddess Chamundeshwari rides through the city on it

The private durbar hall has  pillars painted with gold and till date, no touch up has been done to maintain it

The Mysore Palace has 12 temples located within its premises. Each one has a unique legend attached to it.

The private durbar hall has a solid silver door that was used only by the Maharaja, The other dignitaries had a separate door.

The Mysore Maharajas celebrated Dasara festival with a lot of pomp & glory. The tradition continues to date . During the 10 days, you can witness the elephant procession that starts from this gate  and goes across Mysore.
