10 Romantic Destinations from my Travels

posted in: Asia, Cities, Europe | 28

With Valentine’s Day round the corner, I could not resist the Romance in the air and hence, decided to jump right into the spirit of it. I am not a big fan of Valentine’s Day but I admit that I am tad bit romantic. Having traveled around, there are a few places that for me will always be special. I am refraining from adding my honeymoon destination – Sri Lanka for I feel that will always top the charts for me. It is amongΒ the other places that I have visited, I have picked 10 that struck me as the most romantic.

There are certain vibes about a place that make it romantic for me – be it the pure nature around or the historical stories around the place. Sometimes, it is inexplicable and which is why, I may not be able to explain why I found these places Romantic but they just were! At least for me! So here goes – My pick of the 10 most romantic destinations from my travels so far.

1) Udaipur

I am still reeling from my recent trip to Rajasthan and which is why Udaipur is on top of my mind. The lovely sunset over Lake Pichola and the boating ride totally had me feeling mushy. It sure is a special feeling to watch the Sun go down – with my hubby by my side πŸ™‚ There is a certain magic in the air as the darkness sets in and the lights of the various heritage sites around the lake come on.

2) Netherlands

Yes, I know Netherlands is a country but for me the entire trip felt amazing – be it the lovely tulip gardens of Keukenhof or the green meadows dotted by the cows grazing or the city of Amsterdam with its canals. I would have loved to do a cycle tour with my hubby here but well, time was short. There was just such an amazing vibe in the entire country. I did leave this country with a promise, rather a wish that I want to come back here with Ash, my hubby – just the two of us.

3) Lucerne

The entire Europe trip was a gift to ourselves for our 10th anniversary. And while I can say each place that we visited was special, there were a few that were extra special. The little time that we spent in Lucerne, walking along the bridge and watching those white swans gliding along – will remain etched in my memory. Added to that, the special gift from the Swiss shops that my hubby surprised me with – there definitely is a special feeling that I have associated with Lucerne.

4) Innsbruck

Innsbruck in Austria was a surprise for me. This town had an really laid back atmosphere and wherever you looked, you saw couples doing things together – be it sightseeing like us or cycling around the park or generally, just walking around the small streets. The amazing thing is none of the couples were overtly lovey-dovey and yet, there was something very amazing about them. I loved the central square with its cute little shops and the world’s oldest hotel. The entire town with its cute squares and a backdrop of the Austrian Alps had an inexplicable draw making it another place that I hope to be return to with Ash.

5) Gokarna

The tranquil beach of Gokarna with rocks, waves splashing all around and the golden glow of the setting sun Β – the entire scene seems romantic, isn’t it? There is no way you can feel otherwise. Added to that was the lovely experience of lying down under the clear starry night on deck chairs – with the cool breeze blowing the soft curtains of the deck and the music of the waves filling in the silence.

6) Goa

Goa has a different charm for me. It is a place where Ash and me have been quite a few times and each experience holds a special memory for us. From biking around, beach hopping, discovering different food joints to just relaxing, Goa has it all.Β Depending on what activity we want to do, we pick our beaches – the South Goan ones for its tranquil and quiet time and the North Goa ones for its fun and busy life.Β It is no wonder a lot of us actually, pick it for a honeymoon.Β

7) Backwaters of Kerala

An experience on the houseboat in Kerala is bound to be a romantic experience for all. You are together and yet not, you share something and yet nothing. The gentle lapping of the water as your houseboats heads to the horizon – the lovely setting sun that casts an orange glow on the water while the sky is dotted with birds flying over the swaying palms. Sigh!

This is one experience that is best with your beloved and one that I would recommend not doing alone.

8) Wayanad

Wayanad for me has been like Goa, where I have managed to spend some quality time with Ash – be it trekking down to the gorgeous waterfalls or having fun under it. There has always been something to do and something to discover together. The little chill in the air adds to the warmth in a relationship alright. πŸ˜‰ Closer to where I stay, I have managed to return here plenty of times, each time being more amazing than the previous.

9) Bali

Tanah Lot in Bali

Yet another place that Ash and me have promised to go back to. There is something about the beaches, about the fields and the country itself that gets you together and leaves you with a really awesome feeling. The one place that I loved was Tanah Lot – with its sunset over the temple and the sea waves lashing against it. They say that the entire temple is surrounded by water during high tides, making the entire Sunset experience mesmerizing and romantic. We were not that lucky to witness it in its full glory but despite that, the entire experience was unforgettable.Β

10) Coorg

Last but not the least – Coorg. I loved waking to those misty morning with chirpy birds and a cup of coffee in my hand. Added to that, loved the evenings where we snuggled around the warm bonfires. I have been there during the monsoons as well, and the experience has just been amazing – soaked to the skin while rafting along the river Cauvery. The rafting experience being a treasured memory – our first outing after our marriage. πŸ™‚

That makes my list of 10 most romantic destinations from my travels complete. Which of these places have you been to? And have they always felt so special? Or were there some other ones that were special for you? Comment in and let me know.

To all you amazing folks out there – Happy Valentine’s Day.
