I was a kid when I first fell in love with the gorgeous tulips at Keukenhof. It was a famous 1980s Bollywood movie called Silsila that introduced me to this colorful world of tulips. The Yash Chopra movie added visiting Keukenhof tulip fields and garden firmly on my bucket list. I finally able to tick off after almost 3 decades. And gosh! What an experience it was.

Nestled in the heart of the Netherlands, Keukenhof is often referred to as the most beautiful spring garden in the world. Each year, millions of visitors travel from across the globe to witness the breathtaking display of vibrant, colorful flowers in full bloom. With a focus on Dutch floriculture and an emphasis on flower bulbs, this magnificent garden showcases not just tulips, but daffodils, hyacinths, and other floral delights.

I was totally bowled over by Keukenhof’s expansive layout, consisting of various themed areas, which is a complete riot of colors. Keukenhof tulip gardens are open for just seven to eight weeks in the spring. That is why planning a visit to Keukenhof requires careful consideration of the garden’s schedule and peak bloom times. I visited this Garden of Europe on a day trip from Amsterdam. You can also visit it from various other cities.

What is Keukenhof?

Keukenhof, is often referred to as one of the most beautiful spring garden in the world. Also, referred to as the Garden of Europe, this is a park located in the Netherlands that showcases a range of flowering plants – including tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.

Keukenhof garden is a popular tourist destination in Holland– almost iconic of Dutch horticultural mastery and heritage. However, it was not always so. The place has a little history that you should read about to appreciate it better.  

History of Keukenhof Spring Gardens

The history of Keukenhof dates back to the 15th century when it was originally used as hunting grounds by Countess Jacoba van Beieren (Jacqueline of Bavaria). The area served as a source of herbs and game for the kitchen of Teylingen Castle, leading to its name ‘Keukenduyn’ or kitchen dunes. In 1641, Keukenhof Castle was built, and the estate eventually grew to over 200 hectares.

It was in the 19^th century that Keukenhof was transformed into the gardens that currently exist. It was the work of two landscape artists – Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul that changed the face of these tulip gardens in Netherlands. Later in 1949, an organization of bulb growers and flower exporters decided to develop this flower park with the aim of showcasing their products to the world. The Keukenhof garden Netherlands finally opened to the opening in 1950 with over 200,000 visitors.

Not only home to tulips, but the gardens also showcase a variety of other flowers, including hyacinths and daffodils. The connection between Dutch royalty and Keukenhof is notable, with monarchs such as Beatrix and Willem-Alexander having visited the park over the years. Today Keukenhof operates under the charitable foundation of Count Carel De Gaaf van Lynden, ensuring its preservation and continued growth as a significant cultural and historical site in the heart of the Netherlands.

Where is Keukenhof Tulip Gardens?

Keukenhof Tulip Gardens is located in the Netherlands, specifically in the town of Lisse, South Holland. This world-renowned garden is situated approximately 40 km from Amsterdam and around 58 km from Rotterdam.

Are Keukenhof tulip fields the same as the Keukenhof garden?

Interestingly, this is one misconception that first-time visitors to Keukenhof have – me included! The internet shows Keukenhof as sprawling fields of tulips but in reality, the garden is not this.

Keukenhof Garden is actually a planned garden with floral displays. Besides tulips, you will see other flowers like hyacinths, freesias, gerberas and orchids in the garden. It is a beautiful showcase of spring flowers.

Keukenhof tulip fields, better known as Lisse tulip fields are actual fields where tulips are grown to be sold. They are generally private properties and are located around the main Keukenhof garden. Yes, it is possible to explore and photograph them, but more on this coming up in my things to do in Keukenhof section.

When is Keukenhof open?

Though this Netherlands flower garden hosts private events and festivals throughout the year, it is open to the public only for a brief eight-week period in the spring, typically from mid-March to mid-May. You have to keep in mind that there is a very short window for visiting Keukenhof and hence, it is best to plan as early as you can.

Also, remember that the Keukenhof tulips and other flowers bloom is a natural phenomenon and largely depends on the weather. Therefore, the exact opening times for the gardens do tend to vary slightly from year to year. For example, in 2023, the gardens were open from 23rd March to 14th May.

NOTE: The Keukenhof Tulip Festival in 2024 is from 21 March – 12 May

While the main gardens are only accessible during the tulip season, the Keukenhof castle and castle gardens remain open all year round. Also, admission to the castle gardens is free.

Best things to do in Keukenhof gardens Netherlands

From serene Keukenhof tulip fields to Instagram-worthy art installations and unique flower shows, there is just so much to see and do in this Garden of Europe. Time will actually fly as you embark on your tour of Keukenhof.  The first thing that you must do when you reach here is to grab the Keukenhof map and then set off ticking this list of the best things to do in Keukenhof.

Enjoy the flower displays in the Garden of Europe

Keukenhof is a paradise for flower enthusiasts, as it features a wide array of flower varieties including traditional Dutch tulips, sweet-scented hyacinths, sunny daffodils, and rarer amaryllis. Each year, the garden exhibits a staggering 1.4 million flowers of varying colors and types.

When I visited Keukenhof, I was just two days short of its closure. Most of the tulips were already harvested but even so, the place was a floral rainbow. The riot of colors and the remaining flower displays are apt for some lovely selfies and photos of an everlasting memory.

Bike through the Keukenhof tulip fields

Well, actually they are Lisse tulip fields which are filled with millions of tulips, creating a stunning and Instagram-worthy experience. The fields are usually in full bloom between late March and late May.

You can rent a bike near the entrance of the main Keukenhof tulip garden or just book one online. The cycling routes are fixed and range from 5 km to 25 km. You will be given these when you rent the bikes. If you want, you can even opt for the guided tours to enjoy the Lisse tulip fields.

Climb the iconic Keukenhof Molen (Dutch Windmill) for breathtaking views of the Keukenhof tulip fields

Located within the grounds of Keukenhof, the historic windmill not only serves as an iconic symbol of Dutch culture but also offers a fantastic vantage point. You can even climb the windmill and enjoy the vistas of the surrounding tulip fields and gardens.

The windmill is actually an old one built in the 1890s but it was not a part of the Keukenhof gardens. It was installed later in the 1950s.

During your Keukenhof visit, you will see impressive sculptures and artworks scattered throughout the park. These captivating pieces complement the natural beauty of the flowers, adding an artistic touch to the garden experience. Plus some of them are quirky enough for you to pose with and create a memorable frame.

When I visited Keukenhof, there were these gigantic clogs (Dutch wooden shoes) that were kept in front of the Keukenhof Molen. One of them was so huge that three people could sit in it and click a photo. I – well, chose the slightly smaller one to pose.

Explore the various pavilions

The Keukenhof Gardens house several pavilions where visitors can admire a variety of flowers and plants. Some of them have waterbodies around with numerous birds like peacocks, swans and mallards. The pavilions are marked well on the Keukenhof map that you can get at the entrance. They are spread across the park and have their own café and restroom.

Wilhelmina pavilion

This one is right next to the pond where you can see beautiful swans gliding around. There is an outdoor café by the pool and a souvenir shop next to it. Don’t miss the old building next to the souvenir shop. This is one of the older buildings from the early times of Keukenhof gardens.

Irene pavilion

This is easily recognizable with an old organ barrel that still plays melodies. The pavilion used to be the original entrance of the Keukenhof tulip garden.

Oranje Nassau pavilion

The Oranje Nassau pavilion of Keukenhof is where a flower exhibition is held. I found amazing flower arrangements and arches of lily in this indoor space. Some of them were so artistic – they almost felt as if they couldn’t be done with natural flowers.  Almost felt like a princess here – surrounded by floral scents and sights.  

Julianna Pavilion

If you want to know the history of tulips, you must not skip this pavilion in Keukenhof. Not only you will learn about the various stages of growth of the tulips but also all about its trading and export landmarks. And trust me, it has quite a history. This area is also, called Tulipomania Pavilion.

Beatrix Pavilion

This is one space where you will find a collection of orchid varieties, providing a fascinating experience for plant enthusiasts.

Willem Alexander pavilion

This is a greenhouse that has one of the largest display of Keukenhof tulips. It is almost at the center of the garden. Right beside it is a small playhouse for the kids called the Nijntjes / Miffy’s playhouse. This is a Dutch bunny created by Dick Bruna and is known across the world. The souvenir shop here sells the signature bunny goodies for you to carry back home.

Embark on the Keukenhof whisper boat tour

Right next to the windmill, is the ticket counter for the Lisse whisper boat tour. This is a 45-minute tour that takes you along the Keukenhof tulip fields. It also, includes an audio guide. I was quite tempted to try it out but had to let go as I hadn’t booked this Keukenhof boat tour in advance. The waiting time for the last-minute tickets was a little higher than my budgeted time.

Get some ideas with the inspiration gardens of Keukenhof

Between the playground and the windmill area, there is a space where you can get inspiration for your own balcony or garden. These themed gardens change every year. When I visited it in 2015 (the year of Van Gogh theme), there were eight different layouts.

Visit the Keukenhof Castle

The Keukenhof castle is right next to the gardens but has a separate ticket. This is the old mansion where the story of Keukenhof Tulip Gardens was first born. The castle was built in the 1600s and still has the old paintings and furniture on display. You can book a tour for it online.

The castle grounds also, have a petting farm which the kids are bound to enjoy. The woods behind the estate make a great hiking trail. The castle and its gardens are open throughout the year. The castle gardens are free to visit.

Catch the Flower Parade at Keukenhof (Bloemencorso Bollenstreek)

The Flower Parade in Netherlands is one of the largest parades in the world that features floats decorated with natural flowers.  It starts at Noordwijk and ends at Harlem – a total distance of 42 km. It is said to attract over 1 million visitors. Also, called Bloemencorso Bollenstreek, this usually takes place on a specified day in April.

One of the viewing stations for this parade is right outside the Keukenhof Gardens. There is no ticket for viewing this. However, you will need to plan visiting Keukenhof well in advance. In 2024, the flower parade is going to be held on 20^th of April.

Conquer the Keukenhof Maze

Close to the playground is a maze – which though small is a good enough challenge for kids and adults. If you end up conquering it, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the whole Keukenhof gardens.

If pedal power is not your cup of tea, then choose to explore the Lisse Tulip fields in an electric vehicle. There are electric cars available on rent near the entrance of the Keukenhof park. You can drive along the fields on designated pathways and enjoy the flowers at Keukenhof.

A little about the Keukenhof Theme

One of the most unique things about Keukenhof tulip garden is that it has a theme every year. The composition of various flowers, including tulips, freesias, hyacinths and orchids is well planned in advance to reflect that theme.  

In 2015, I was fortunate to have seen the Van Gogh theme of Keukenhof. The Keukenhof tulips were lined such as to create a self-portrait of the famed artist. The theme was in honor of Van Gogh’s 125^th death anniversary.

2023 saw the theme of “Flower Classic” where the floral arrangements were inspired by classical works of art and music. The 2024 theme has still not been announced.

How to Visit Keukenhof from Various Cities

How to Visit Keukenhof from Amsterdam?

The distance from Amsterdam to Keukenhof is around 40 km and its takes around one hour by road. One option is to take public transport, ideally a direct bus from Schiphol Airport. Alternatively, you can purchase a combined ticket that includes entrance to the gardens as well as bus transportation. You can even buy one here with a round trip from Amsterdam to Keukenhof.

How to Visit Keukenhof from Leiden?

Leiden is also conveniently close to Keukenhof, requiring approximately a 30-minute drive. Public transport is available from Leiden Central Station, where you can catch bus 854 to the gardens. Alternatively, renting a bike and cycling through the flower fields between Leiden and Keukenhof is a popular way to enjoy the Dutch countryside.

How to Visit Keukenhof from Rotterdam?

Keukenhof is one of the popular day trips from Rotterdam. You can use the public transport by taking a train from Rotterdam Central Station to Leiden, and then catching 854 bus to Keukenhof.

Here too, you can book one of the many day trips to Keukenhof that include guided tours as well as transport.

How to Visit Keukenhof from Haarlem

Haarlem is close to Keukenhof, which can be reached in less than an hour. You can take bus 50 from Haarlem Central Station. The bus journey takes around 40 minutes.

It is possible to rent a car or bike to reach Keukenhof fields of flowers.

Check the website for the various Keukenhof events or you will find them displayed near the entrance of the garden. These include festive specials like Easter shows or specific flower shows like rose shows, orchid shows etc.

Carry your rain gear and bundle up:

The gardens are at their best during the tulip season, which is typically from mid-April to early May. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, as it is quite unpredictable during spring in the Netherlands. There are light showers during this season and it is best to carry an umbrella or rain jacket to battle that.

Also, the weather is still a little chilly. Since Keukenhof is an open garden, you could find it windy. Best to bundle up with a jacket and scarf when visiting Keukenhof.

Parking and transportation:

If you are driving, arrive early to secure a parking spot, as spaces can be limited. Alternatively, consider taking public transportation or using a bicycle to reach the gardens. Parking and bicycle rental information can be found on the Keukenhof Gardens website.

Food and Refreshment at Keukenhof

Every pavilion in Keukenhof has a restaurant or café. You can choose to dine in any of them. The prices of these restaurants is fairly reasonable. Alternatively, you can just pack your own food and double up your Keukenhof visit as a picnic.
